Model Green City: Troy, New York

Basics about Troy, New York

Troy is just north of Albany, New York's capital city. Troy has a rich history, as it was a major industrial center of the United States during the civil war. Troy is located in Rensselaer County, along the Hudson River in upstate New York. Troy's location near the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers gave it the hydrological power that was integral for it's industrial growth during the 19th century.

Since it's peak as an industrial city, Troy has been experiencing an economic recession. This is an experience Troy shares with many upstate New York cities. Fortunately, Troy has a rich Victorian architectural legacy leftover from it's industrial boom times. This setting has made the city particularly attractive to the arts community, and many new galleries and antiques shops are moving to Troy.

As Troy is currently undergoing an upswing in cultural activity, it is an opportune time to implement the Green City Project.

From 'Silicon Valley' of the 19th Century to Green City of the 21st Century: Troy as Model Sustainable Community
